Tip of the Day #2: Citing Images

Citing Images

  • This can be tricky
  • Try to trace the image back to its source
  • DO NOT cite Google Images (that would be like citing the librarian who helped you find a book)
  • If you have multiple images from the same archive you only need to cite the archive; not each individual image

Check out the great NoodleTools Guide to Citing Images here

Tip of the Day 1.1: Fordham University Sourcebooks

Check out the Fordham University Internet Sourcebooks.
It is not cheating to use lists of sources that others have put together (of course you still have to read them!).

Scroll down on the website and find the sourcebook that will help you.
Most of you will use the Modern History Sourcebook.

NHD Tip of the Day #1: Citing Journal Articles

Citing Journal Articles on NoodleTools

Choose the correct tab on NT. If you find a journal article on Ebsco choose the database tab on NoodleTools (Note: When you search on Ebsco you are actually searching on a number od databases. Choose the right one. e.g., Academic Premier Plus, Business Source Premier, etc.).  .

Preview your citation on EBSCO

You can see what your MLA citation should look like by clicking the little icon on the right side that looks like this

Do not just copy and paste the citation from EBSCO into NT; if you do you will have formatting problems when you export to Word at the end. Put the information in the NT fields.

URLs
URLs are optional in MLA citations. We are asking you to add the URL to the field on NT.
The citation will look clunky with the URL (and different from the EBSCO preview) but don't fret. When we export to Word at the end we will choose not to include URLs.

You have qualified for States and your work has been recognized; now it's on to Columbus (Saturday, April 26, 2014).

ALL the projects at States are good.

You kind of have 4 choices regarding your next steps:
1. Don't go (we hope you don't choose this one)
2. Don't make any changes at all (not recommended)
3. Completely start your project over from scratch (ugh)
4. Edit and revise your project to be more competitive (highly recommended)
  • In a week or so the judges sheets will come back; this feedback can be helpful
  • Have us take a really good look at your work
  • Keep researching and adding sources
  • Get your annotated bibs looking spiffy (Use NoodleTools!)
  • Watch the webinars on bibliography and going to the contest
  • There will be a day soon when a local expert or two will come in to look at your work (TBA)
Traveling to States
  • The contest is at the student union at THE Ohio State University
  • If you go down the night before and you need a room book it now; there is always something going on in Columbus
  • Ms. Al and I will be going down leaving super-early (~5AM) on Saturday morning; I have 5 open seats in my van
  • You must get your picture taken with the Brutus the Buckeye sculpture at the Ohio Union (especially if you are a Michigan fan)
  • If we have time before awards I can give you a quick tour of the campus (I went to school there)
